L-Ergothioneine (ERGO)

What is L-Ergothioneine? (L-Ergo)

L-Ergo is an antioxidant that is found in most plants and animals. The human body cannot produce L-Ergo and yet the human DNA has coding to produce a transporter that is specific for L-Ergo. This means that humans and animals must acquire L-Ergo through their diet.

Which organism produces L-Ergo?

L-Ergo is produced by fungi and mycobacteria in the soil which are then absorbed by plants via their roots. Animals and humans acquire L-Ergo when they consume these plants.

Why is L-Ergo important?

L-Ergo is one of the most potent antioxidants currently known to man. Antioxidants are needed to combat oxidative stress in the body which is the main cause of most chronic diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, and many more.

The most potent antioxidant currently known is Glutathione which is produced in the human body. However, production of this powerful antioxidant diminishes over time and test have shown that by 60 years of age, the human body produces less than half the amount of Glutathione compared to a 20 year old human body. And the injection of glutathione in Parkinson’s patients, as remarkable as the effects may be, is but temporary as Dr. Perlmutter has shown among his patients. L-Ergo has been shown to play a significant role in the body by increasing the level of Glutathione naturally in the body.
